Tigard-Tualatin School District seeks real space for virtual school

The Tigard-Tualatin Schools District is one step closer to kicking off a new online learning academy that could open its doors as soon as February.

In October, the School Board gave the thumbs up for an online pilot program that would allow students the option to take certain classes online instead of in a traditional classroom.

“We knew that we had a bunch of kids in the district already doing online classes (through other districts),” said district spokeswoman Susan Stark Haydon. “There was obviously a need, and we thought we could be able to fill it.”

Hillsboro School District will add education options to some schools over the next few years

Hillsboro School District is moving forward with plans to eventually offer its students six more educational options.

Hillsboro will start its own virtual learning, offering online classes for students inside and outside the district.

Butte Falls hears proposal to become a charter school

The Butte Falls School Board of Directors heard a proposal from Superintendent Dr. Courtney to establish Butte Falls as a charter school. The plan would be to build a program that would be attractive to new students, resulting in an increase in student numbers. Some suggestions included small classes, natural resources, renewable energy and online classes.

Education Board Wrestles With Growing Need For Online Classes

Demand for online education is growing among Oregon’s public school students. This fall is expected to be no different.

The debate over how to manage the rising need, though, pits entrenched forces, like the teachers’ union, against rising powers, like Oregon’s virtual charter schools. Rob Manning reports.

Oregon has a handful of online charter schools already in existence, but how to govern them is still in question.

Online schools raise questions that weren’t anticipated when Oregon’s charter school law was written.

Catching up: What did Oregon students think of online classes?

“Of the kids who were full-time online, the program appeared to be successful,” said Jane Peschel, director of instruction for the Oregon School District. “Of the students who tried one course, we had about half of them actually complete the semester.”

For the 2009-10 school year, the Oregon School District offered online courses in an effort to recapture students attending virtual schools. Traditional high school students also were allowed to take one online course per semester.
